What You Can Expect from a Hatteras Island Vacation

A Hatteras Island vacation is often described as experiencing the Outer Banks as they were 40 years ago. Unlike our neighbors to the north, this area is quieter, less developed and has a notable laid back attitude. As you travel the two-lane N.C. Highway 12, with the sound to the west and the ocean to the east, you’ll notice that most of the area, except for the small towns that dot the road, is undeveloped since it’s owned by the National Park Service, which provides a vista that’s the same as you would have seen 200 years ago. Still, you’ll definitely have everything you need nearby.

Eat

There are a variety of great Hatteras Island restaurants ranging from hot dog shacks to places known all over the area for their seafood and other creative dishes.

Play

Outdoor recreation is Hatteras Island’s calling card. We’re internationally known for surfing, kiteboarding and fishing, but if you’re into standup paddleboarding, kayaking, parasailing, wreck diving or really any other sport you can do in the water, this is your place. Of course, on the quieter side, you might want to ride horses through a maritime forest, take long walks on the beach to hunt for shells, visit one of America’s most well-known lighthouses, learn about the original people who lived here hundreds of years ago, play miniature golf or relax with a massage or yoga class.

Things to Do

Fish

Hatteras Island has long been known for its world-class fishing of all kinds. The charter fishing industry became famous here and is still one of the most popular things to do in Hatteras. But if heading out to the Gulf Stream isn’t your thing, you still have so many options to catch those tasty swimmers. Beach, sound and inshore fishing are all popular ways to wet a line. And, right across the street from Outer Banks Motel is Dillon’s Corner (yep, owned by the same family!) where you can find any tackle supplies you might need. To stay up to the minute on what’s biting where, you can check out the latest fishing report.
